Many of the poems surviving from the ancient world are recorded prayers, or stories about religious subject matter, but they also include historical accounts, instructions for everyday activities, love songs,  and fiction. The surviving tablets give a good clue to the narrative poem and the story it contains. As a result, the use of these formal elements, and of the white space they help create, became an important part of the poet's toolbox.
